Prior Approvals Needed Before Sabbatical Leaves

Most federal sponsors require prior approval of changes in Principal Investigator (PI) status and/or Absence of PI for a continuous period of 3 months or more. Sponsor rules may vary, but NIH has clarified that working from a location different from that approved in the award may constitute an absence.

Federal agencies typically require submission of prior approval requests at least 30 days in advance of the proposed change.  Prior to PI Sabbatical Leaves and any other change in key personnel status (employment, leaves, or long absences from campus), units should work with the Award Management Team (AMT) to request prior approval as appropriate for the investigator’s current awards.
